I recently purchaced a nice 318, and I'd like to eventually aquire a tiller for it. Guys, I'm a novice with this garden tractor... what am I going to need to do to fit this tool onto this machine? It's a 1987, with the smaller of the two Onan engines. No rear hydrolics are installed as yet... it is currently set up with the quick attach bracket for the bagging cart and powerflo.

You will have to get the rear pto attachment for your tractor. then the tiller and lift bar.

Is that belt, or hydrolics, or both?

There were two tillers for the 318. One used the rear PTO and was shaft driven. The rear PTO is kind of rare.
The other tiller was hydraulic and used its own pump. The pump mounted under the tractor (in place of the mower deck) and was driven off the front PTO.

Wow PeterE... that plow and disc combination looks pretty effective, but then I guess I'm looking at a 3 pt. hitch, and rear lift right? See guys that's what I'm asking... there are obviously different options and my problem is that I need specifics. Which # plow? What # tiller? What is the rear PTO's part name? Things like that.
I guess it would help if I were a little more specific too. I'll be breaking ground on about an half acre of virgin NC clay, hoping to put in a garden of typical plants. Perhaps then a food plot or 2 for the deer season. The 318 I bought is stock, other than the addition of the quick hitch bracket... so I'm starting from scratch, and I'm also new to the JD tractor world.
This sure seems like the place to get info...

The three-point is from Reugg Hitch. The three-point on a 318 is attached to the mower deck lift at the back of the tractor. If you can raise your mower, then you've got that part.
I bought the plow and disc new from John Deere last year. I don't know the model number, but there is only one option.
These new attachments use the limited Category 1 hitch, as found on the X700 tractors. Older garden tractor plows use a Category 0 hitch. Ruegg has both size hitches.
The only way to get a rear PTO is to find a used one. They sell for about $1000. Search eBay for '318 rear pto' and you'll usually find a couple.

I have the model 318 with rear mounted pto shaft driven 48 inch rototiller, have the 60 inch belly mower and the 44 front loader. My question is do they still make cat 'O' attachments I really need a box scraper for leveling. This tractor was bought new in 1984 and I only Have a 146 hours on it.

We have a hydraulic tiller for the 318. Works very well. Powerfull enough to cut right through sod. Easy to mount and dismount. Biggest drawback is they are usually pretty pricey. You can easily have $1000-1500 in one with all the right brackets and in good condition.
